3rd party integrations in windPRO
Smarter wind modeling with WAsP and CFD
windPRO integrates seamlessly with third-party tools like WAsP and CFD to enhance the accuracy and flexibility of wind resource assessment and energy yield calculations.
Sharpen your site analysis
WAsP
When used within windPRO, WAsP enables precise modeling of wind flow over complex terrain and supports micrositing by estimating long-term wind conditions and turbine production.
CFD
Offers high-resolution analysis of wind flow in areas with highly complex terrain or significant obstacles. CFD provides detailed insights into turbulence, flow separation, and local effects.
WAsP
EMD is an official reseller of the WAsP software, developed by DTU Wind Energy, Denmark. WAsP can be used as a standalone tool or conveniently integrated as an internal calculation engine within windPRO, making wind resource assessment and energy yield calculations faster and easier.
Why WAsP?
Industry-standard software for
- Wind resource assessment
- Turbine siting
- Energy yield calculations for both single turbines and full wind farms
With nearly 5,000 licenses sold in around 100 countries, WAsP has been trusted globally for over 30 years.
What can you do with WAsP?
- Estimate energy production for turbines and wind farms
- Analyze wind farm efficiency
- Create wind resource maps
- Determine the best siting for turbines
- Perform IEC wind condition assessments (when paired with WAsP Engineering)
Included utility tools
WAsP comes with handy tools for:
- Wind data analysis
- Digital map creation and editing
- Power and thrust curve editing
- IEC site assessments and power performance analysis
Flexible data inputs
WAsP uses data from various sources:
- Wind data from met masts or mesoscale models
- Elevation data from satellite sources (e.g. Shuttle Radar)
- Land cover and obstacles from topographic maps, satellite imagery, or services like Google Earth
Advanced wind flow modeling
WAsP includes powerful physical models to simulate wind behavior in a wide range of terrains—from flat plains to moderately complex hills. For very complex terrain, WAsP connects easily with external CFD models for high-resolution wind flow analysis.
Key models include:
- Wind flow over terrain and obstacles
- Wake loss modeling within wind farms
- Atmospheric stability modeling
- Linear IBZ model for wind extrapolation

CFD
windPRO works with a range of CFD tools, such as WAsP-CFD, OFWind, WindSim and Meteodyn. EMD sells OFWind CFD licenses, WAsP CFD credits and operates the CFD calculation cluster.
Flowreq & Flowres formats
If you are using a 3ʳᵈ party CFD tools such as WindSim or Meteodyn WT, you can save you a lot of time and resources by using .flowreq and .flowres files.
EMD has created the two open file formats to make it easy to export data from windPRO into a 3ʳᵈ party CFD and to import the flow-results back to windPRO. The flow-result file can be used together with the advanced Scaler features in windPRO to efficiently experiment with multiple turbine positions, hub heights, operation modes or even wind data .
This saves a lot of time and resources compared to running a full CFD simulation for every change.
