windPRO: Offshore (English) 3 sessions

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at windPRO users interested in learning how to do yield assessments offshore.

Prerequisites:

BASIS course windPRO + Energy Yield Assessment course windPRO

What you will learn:

  • What is special about yield calculations offshore
  • How to use data from floating LiDAR technology
  • Accessing and using mesoscale data offshore
  • Yield assessments
  • Layout optimization, for AEP and LCOE
  • Offshore relevant losses: wakes, curtailment and performance losses
  • Uncertainties of offshore yield assessments

What NOT to expect:
As the course focus on offshore conditions, onshore yield assessment will not be covered. Site parameter analysis offshore only includes the wind resource and not turbulence, extreme wind speed or other load specific topics. Environmental calculations (noise, flicker, ZVI) are not covered in this course.

What you will learn (details):

  1. How offshore yield assessment is different

  • What data are available and useful offshore
  • The principles of yield assessment offshore
  • Influence of waves and tide
  • We look at different scenarios concerning location and data availability

  1. How to prepare data for yield assessment offshore
  • We look at floating LiDAR data, how to prepare, quality-check and repair them
  • Access to mesoscale data, time series and wind resource maps
  • We go through calibration of mesoscale data as well as long-term correction (MCP) of local LiDAR data

  1. How to run yield assessment calculations offshore

  • How do you include terrain when all you see is water?
  • We will run calculations in three specific scenarios: No data are available, poor or non-local data are available and good local data are available

  1. How to run layout optimization offshore

  • We will optimize offshore wind farm layouts based on two different criteria: maximize production and minimize Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) through the use of cost maps.

  1. How to assess losses and uncertainties in the energy yield assessment

  • We will consider wake losses, including a discussion of cluster wakes, as well as curtailments on the wind farm, such as bird/bat curtailment, temperature derating and grid curtailment.
  • How to deal with uncertainties? The uncertainties that can be calculated and those that are harder to assess.
