Who should attend?
The course is recommended for new windPRO users and a prerequisite for all the other windPRO courses.
Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites for attending this course.
What you will learn:
· Introduction to windPRO: file management, user interface
· Starting a Project from scratch
· Handling Layers and Objects
· Importing background maps from files or servers (EMD, WMS, TMS, …)
· Importing and editing a Digital Elevation Model
· Generating a steepness map
· Importing and editing GIS data from files or servers (EMD, WMS, WFS, WMTS, ArcGIS REST, …)
· Importing tree heights
· Entering Obstacles
· Importing/defining land plots and exclusion zones
· Entering planned/existing wind turbines: the windPRO turbine Catalogue
· The Global Atlas of Siting parameters (GASP): a good greenfield starting point
· Result layers – import/load/export functionality
· Export to Google Earth
What you will learn (details):
1. Get started on setting up a project
Get a comprehensive understanding of the BASIS module, which serves as the foundation for all modules in windPRO. Participants will:
· Understand the BASIS module and its role as the platform onto which all windPRO modules are nested
· Learn about the Layer and Object structure
· Import various background maps, an essential visual aid for the user
2. Enter all the data needed for future calculations
· Learn about and play with the GIS capabilities of windPRO: importing and editing height contours, land cover/use data, land plots available and/or excluded from development, cadastral boundaries, protected areas, …
· Learn about the plethora of GIS data, wind and solar data, maps, satellite images available to windPRO users from our online database
· Explore WindCat - the unique windPRO turbine Catalogue: essentials such as power curves, noise datasets and external dimensions are available for 1000+ turbines, and user additions & modifications are always allowed
· Visualize your project in 3D in Google Earth
· Have a preliminary insight on the site wind potential through the GASP
Any subsequent windPRO calculations (e.g. energy yield or environmental impact assessments) will rely on part or all of the above items and topics.
Not included in this course:
Energy production/environmental impact calculations/site suitability will not be addressed in this course. This is an essential introduction to all other windPRO courses.
