Renewable project with limited grid connection
About this case study
This scenario investigates an existing 100 MW wind farm with a grid export limit of 100 MW. Using energyPRO, the system is incrementally expanded to evaluate value creation through hybridisation and storage.
1. Starting system: Baseline operation with wind-only generation
The baseline system has a straightforward operation, where all produced energy is sold to the grid if the electricity prices are positive:
2. Analysis of feasibility of including solar PV plant
This step is done using the OPTIMIZE module, which aids in identifying the optimal size of a solar PV plant based on an assumed investment cost of 1 million EUR per MW of installed capacity:
The optimal size found is approximately 36 MW, and this is included in the system:
Addition of the solar PV plant, allows to better utilise the existing grid connection, however, there is a significant grid curtailment stopping the PV plant from operating in the peak hours:
3. Optimal sizing of a BESS to absorb excess production and shift energy to high-price hours
Using the OPTIMIZE module, the optimal size of BESS is determined to be approximately 220 MWh:
Result
The optimised battery enables higher utilisation of renewable generation, reduces curtailment, and increases annual operating income while significantly improving net present value.
The operation with the optimised battery enables the production from renewables to exceed the set grid limit since the excess energy is sent to the battery. To optimise the economy of the project, the battery is discharged in periods with production not reaching the grid limit and favorable prices on the day ahead market:
Conclusions
The COMPARE module allows to easily create a comparison of the key figures.
While the PV only scenario is providing fair financial results with a positive NPV, it is low compared to the required initial investment.
The addition of BESS is significantly improving the business case. The advantage of BESS is also clear when comparing the utilisation factors of the renewable technologies, where both wind and solar is improved:
