OFWind CFD
Advanced terrain flow simulation with OpenFOAM for windPRO
OFWind CFD is a high-resolution Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model developed using OpenFOAM and tailored for integration with windPRO.
Developed and exclusively distributed by EMD, OFWind CFD is designed to model complex terrain flow for wind energy projects, delivering reliable flow field analysis optimized for wind farm planning and energy yield assessments.
What is OFWind CFD?
OFWind CFD uses OpenFOAM (version 2.3.x) libraries to simulate airflow over complex terrain. It processes terrain and roughness data to generate detailed 3D flow field simulations around your wind turbine generator (WTG) area, providing critical inputs for wind resource assessment, site optimization, and project development.
Key features and benefits
Specifically built for windPRO integration
Designed for complex terrain CFD simulation
Highly customizable mesh resolution for speed vs. accuracy
Utilizes OpenFOAM’s trusted solver infrastructure
Flow data importable into windPRO for visual analysis
Cost-Effective
How OFWind CFD works
OFWind CFD begins with a Flowreq file from windPRO, which includes:
-
Orography map of the terrain
-
Roughness map of the area
-
XML configuration with WTG-area coordinates, wind directions, heights, and spatial resolution
OFWind CFD creates a cylindrical 3D mesh around the WTG-area. This mesh:
-
Uses higher resolution near the turbine area for improved accuracy
-
Adjusts based on selected quality settings: Fast, Middle, or Accurate
-
Allows for airflow simulation from all wind directions, perpendicular to the inlet
Using mass and momentum conservation equations, the software:
-
Assumes a steady-state condition for faster computation
-
Employs simplified turbulence models to support desktop-level performance
-
Iteratively calculates the flow field until convergence is reached
For each wind direction, OFWind CFD generates a .flowdat
file containing:
-
Horizontal wind speed
-
Wind direction turn
-
Turbulence intensity (TI)
-
Flow inclination
All direction-specific .flowdat
files are bundled into a .flowres
archive, which is easily imported into windPRO for further analysis and visualization.
Integration with windPRO
The .flowres
output files can be seamlessly imported into windPRO, where they support:
-
Detailed flow visualization
-
Energy yield calculations
-
Site suitability analysis
-
Turbine siting optimization
