The beginning
Per Nielsen and friends build their own wind turbine from recycled materials in the middle of the energy crisis of the 1970s. This creates the foundation for a lifelong interest in renewable energy and technical innovation.
The TEEO project
The Danish Telecom Agency launches the TEEO project on data sharing in the wind industry. Per participates and develops the first software tools for wind calculation – the cornerstone of EMD’s future products.
VE-Data becomes Energi- og Miljødata
VE-Data is renamed the Energi- og Miljødata Association after threats of naming rights from a German institute. The software is distributed throughout Europe – especially Germany – and the organization grows.
Expanding abroad
It was decided to start selling our products abroad. This made business excalate and today we have users in more then 110 countries.
EMD becomes a limited liability company
To protect software and future values, EMD International A/S is established as a subsidiary of the Energy and Environmental Data Association. This enables more professional operations and international expansion.
International recognition and success
EMD's software (including windPRO) becomes the de facto standard for independent wind analyses and is used globally by project developers, banks and insurance companies. The value of the know-how and software runs into hundreds of millions of Danish Kroner, and major international investors are showing ongoing interest.
Cluster services
The establishment of a high-performance computer cluster which e.g. is used to model historical weather data from around the world and for advanced flow modeling.
Queen Margrethe II visits EMD
During the visit, the founder of EMD, Per Nielsen demonstrated to the Queen how we use windPRO to visualise the placement of a wind turbine farm in the landscape. To the Queen's surprise, Per used the Queen's castle in France as an example.
