WAsP CFD
Advanced wind resource modelling for complex terrain
Unlock accurate wind resource assessments in complex terrain with WAsP CFD integrated into windPRO. Designed for semi-complex to complex environments, WAsP CFD leverages computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to deliver high-resolution wind flow simulations.
What is WAsP CFD in windPRO?
WAsP CFD in windPRO allows you to model wind flow over complex terrain using the industry-standard WAsP model combined with high-performance CFD simulations. It requires the same basic inputs as a traditional WAsP analysis:
- Wind data
- Digital elevation model (DEM)
- Roughness map
The CFD analysis is executed on EMD's in-house High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, ensuring fast and powerful results—without transferring confidential site wind measurements. Only terrain and roughness data are uploaded.
Key benefits of using WAsP CFD
High-Resolution CFD Results
Get precise wind flow predictions using WAsP, the trusted model in the wind industry.
No Need for In-House CFD Tools or HPC Hardware
Save on software licenses, computational infrastructure, and specialized expertise.
Fast Turnaround
Receive results within hours—significantly faster than running CFD simulations in-house.
Fully Integrated with windPRO
Seamless workflow for energy yield analysis and site suitability.
Flexible Access
Choose between individual credits or an annual subscription to fit your project needs.
Cost-Effective
Enjoy competitive pricing compared to other CFD solutions.
System Requirements
To run WAsP CFD in windPRO, you’ll need:
-
WAsP 11 or higher
-
windPRO 2.9 or higher
-
WAsP CFD credits or a WAsP CFD Subscription
How to set up a WAsP CFD calculation
Prepare data in windPRO
Ensure you've already: Processed wind data. Created roughness classification. Added elevation contours (initially up to 8 km)
Extend terrain coverage
CFD requires elevation data extending at least 20 km from the site. WAsP CFD uses height contours (not grids). You can extend existing line objects using the “Extend” button.
Terrain & roughness considerations
Terrain data must include contours with 10–20 m separation in the far field.Roughness lines should cover at least 20–30 km.
Point limit
windPRO ensures your terrain data does not exceed the model’s 2 million point limit.
Pricing Options
Single Credits
- €100 / $120 per credit
- One credit = One 2 km x 2 km tile
- Typical site = 3 to 6 tiles
Why Choose a Subscription?
- Predictable Budgeting: Fixed annual pricing.
- Flexible Usage: Ideal for both small and large projects.
- Immediate Access: Credits added upon payment.
- Scalable: Upgrade at any time (downgrades not available).
- Automatic Notifications: Get reminders before expiration.
Unused credits expire at the end of the subscription term and cannot be rolled over.
